He serves as a Captain in the Florida Army National Guard and has been in the Guard for nine years. He previously served in the Florida House of Representatives, representing the 111th District, which includes parts of Miami and Hialeah in northeastern Miami-Dade County, since 2014. Avila will be term limited in 2022 and has announced his intention to run for Miami-Dade County commission district 6.
