In fact, Ana has given top grades to students advocating completely opposite points of view, because they were able to make their cases by citing examples within the work. Come with us to Ana’s classroom for a discussion in her Latin American Literature class on the first chapter of Laura Esquivel’s novel Like Water for Chocolate . One word of advice for you: In Ana’s classroom during this discussion, make certain when you say the name of the character Gertrudis, pronounce the name as hare-TROOD-ee, and not guhr-TROOD.
