RECOGNITIONS Type Information, Recognition District Employees Honored by Local VFW Post 3480 Three outstanding School District 189 staff members were recently recognized by Local VFW Post 3480 for their exceptional dedication and service to students. Honorees include Dr. Kareem Mateen of East St. Louis Senior High School, Dyshunda Curtis of Mason Clark Middle School, and Cindy Colvin of Lincoln Middle School. Each of these employees was celebrated for their willingness to go above and beyond in supporting student success, reflecting the district’s commitment to excellence and care for every learner. AP Exam Achievements at East St. Louis Senior High School Advanced Placement (AP) courses and exams give high school students the opportunity to engage in college-level learning, earn college credit, and strengthen their readiness for postsecondary education. In SY2025, 226 students in grades 9–12 completed AP exams across 15 different courses. The district saw an increase in the number of students scoring a 3 or higher — the benchmark at which most colleges and universities award credit — along with several notable firsts and exceptional achievements: 27 students scored a 3 or higher on at least one AP exam. First-ever perfect score : An 11th grader earned a 5 on the AP Precalculus exam! A 9th grader scored a 4 on AP U.S. Government and Politics. An 11th grader scored a 3 on four different AP exams. Two 11th graders each scored a 3 on two different AP exams. These accomplishments reflect the hard work of our students, the dedication of our educators, and the growing culture of academic excellence at East St. Louis Senior High School. Students earning a score of 3 or higher have already been celebrated on their school campuses, and tonight we proudly commend them again for their outstanding achievements. This is not the end of their journey — many are continuing to take AP classes this school year, while recent graduates are beginning their higher education equipped with a strong foundation of rigor and academic confidence.
