Ms. Winkler greeted the Board Members and Dr. Peplinski: Simi Valley High School had a great first month of school. The theme of the school year is “Simi Valley High School is Classic”. The seniors chose this theme because all major school events are connected with a classic story or fairytale. The class of 2020 has the largest freshman class, with 628 students. Simi High is very excited for this class because their graduating year is our school’s 100th year anniversary. The freshmen that are in the leadership class are working on the Dancing with the Stars

fundraiser. The sophomore class is planning Winter Formal. The junior class is also working very hard on Homecoming. Finally, the senior class is planning all of the senior activities, senior shirts, and graduation announcements. Their leadership class is also planning events for Simi vs. Royal week, anti-bullying week, and the Simi Valley Day’s parade. Simi Valley High School successfully won our first football game against West Ranch High School. School spirit is at an all-time high. In addition, the campus is getting many new cosmetic changes that the staff and students are looking forward to. Each classroom has their own set of about 40 chrome books. Simi Valley High School is looking forward to a very “Classic” year! Carley Connell of Santa Susana High School reports that school had started off great. All the new students have been welcomed and are settling in. Plans for Club Rush are underway and we have been planning themes for the upcoming dances i.e. prom, fall ball, and homecoming. Back to school night is also coming up so we are busy working on posters and advertisements for that as well. All leadership students are planning on being there to help out with any questions parents may have. Everyone is excited about the upcoming events and we are looking forward to a great school year. Fausto Verdugo of Apollo High School reports that here at Apollo High School we have started the year off well! We have welcomed about 45 new students to our campus and just recently celebrated the start of a new school year with our annual welcome back Ice Cream Social. This was a great opportunity to get together as a school and get excited for another successful year. Many exciting events are coming up on campus including the First Fun Friday of the year coming up on September 9 th . This is a lunch time activity that bonds Apollo Students and staff. We have music, activities, and some healthy treats. Classes have started off well and many of our teachers are using the chrome books that they were given over the summer. We are still offering the ROP Ornamental Horticulture class on campus and have just recently added a new Intro to Business ROP Class to our schedule as well. This class will offer credit recovery and pathway exploration for our students. Everyone is very excited about these new opportunities! Lastly, Apollo students participated in our first Blood Drive of the year on September 1st ! It was a huge success! Fernando Estrada of Monte Vista says Monte Vista is excited to begin its second year on our new campus. Lots of excitement abounds, for instance, students have started attending the Robotics and Engineering class, amateur radio class (including launching sub space balloons), golf lessons on the field, our chickens are still laying eggs and vegetables are

being harvested. The Curiosity & Imagination room was opened for our Elementary and Middle school students. The students were seen printing off rubber ducks & cell phone holders on the 3-D printer, coding BB8 and even catching Pokémon creatures! Monte Vista promises many more exciting opportunities for our students in the upcoming year! Kayla Hitt of Royal High School reports Royal has had a fabulous start to the 2016-2017 school year. We kicked the year off with an Opening Day rally on the first day of school that excited students and staff for the year and made us feel proud to be Highlanders. Following this, we invited parents to our Back to School Night and Royal Family Picnic (with food trucks and performances by our ROTC, Band, and Vocal programs) to show them the community we have created at this school and all the opportunities that Royal has to offer. Students flooded our student section, the Kingdom, at our first football game and lit up the stadium with enthusiasm. Our community gathered together to pass out wristbands to everyone at the game in support of a classmate who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Royal’s prime focus for the school is on the 4 A’s: Academics, Athletics, Arts, and Activities and with all our amazing programs like pathways, International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement, Junior ROTC, sports, clubs, choir, band, drama, and leadership, Royal is looking forward to an incredible school year. SEA-EMPLOYEE Amanda Hogan, SEA President, stated the following: ORGANIZATION Good evening President Blough, Clerk of the Board Daniels, Trustees, Dr. Peplinski, and district staff, Our teachers, nurses and speech therapists had a relatively smooth start to the school year. There was excitement in the air because of the continuity of a district vision, needed facilities projects underway, and technology being infused into the classrooms. We want this positive momentum to continue. We cannot go backwards! Many of you remember just a few years ago when our district experienced annual layoffs and cuts in programs. It was a devastating period for our students and employees. Class sizes increased, and we lost many valuable staff & programs. Many of these cuts had to be made due to the lack of California state funding. We cannot return to those days! We are just starting to rebound from those massive cuts and reestablish pre-recession learning conditions for our students. We are rehiring educators, working on reducing class sizes in our district, and making strides in technology. All of this is making a difference in our students’ education!

This is why we must pass Proposition 55. California schools continue to rank among the lowest in the nation in per-pupil funding, and California still has among some of the largest class sizes in the nation. If Proposition 55 is not passed in November, California schools will lose about $6 billion a year and fall further behind other states in per pupil funding. Proposition 55 does NOT raise taxes on anyone; it simply maintains the current income tax rates on the wealthiest Californians. Prop. 55 is a partial extension of Prop. 30 and will continue to stabilize educational funding in our state. If Prop. 55 does not pass, our district will lose about $8 million per year. That will be a huge hit!!! The money collected from Prop. 55 will go directly to local schools. Tonight I am urging the Simi Valley School Board and each trustee to use the sample School Board Resolution that I have given to Dr. Peplinski to endorse this proposition, and a copy for each one of you. Additional information about Prop. 55 can be found on the website protectingcalifornia.com. We need to take every opportunity to educate our local community and voters about the extreme importance of passing this proposition. If the board passes a resolution in support of Prop. 55, they will join over 100 districts, school board trustees and community organizations working towards stabilizing California funding for education. California cannot go back! We need to continue to have stable educational funding in California! Our motto in California for education must be Pass Prop 55 to stay alive! Thank you! CSEA-EMPLOYEE Jim Jarrard, CSEA President, stated the following: ORGANIZATION Good evening President Blough, Clerk Daniels, Trustees and Superintendent Peplinski. Welcomed Mr. Tee Buckle back to SVUSD. As you know, our chapter typically focuses on conference and key local issues during the months of July and August. Now that we are back after summer, I thought you might like an update on events that occurred related to classified employees and our local chapter 310. Conference this year was in San Jose and many new resolutions were adopted, some of which may impact our district if they are passed in Sacramento. Since we have limited time to talk tonight, if you are interested in learning about these resolutions, you can find a summary posted at our chapter310.com website. A key topic at conference was “The California Children’s Education and Health Care Protection Act of 2016” otherwise known as Proposition 55. CSEA asked all chapter

leaders to acknowledge this Proposition to their school boards and members. Last Friday, our “elections” committee was fortunate enough to interview all 5 candidates running for school board trustee positions. Their opinions will be presented to membership at our next chapter meeting on Sept. 12 in hopes that endorsements for candidates can be secured. We will also be discussing the Measure X (Bond) and Measure Y (Term Limits) initiatives so our members are more informed. I would also like to thank Risk Management and Classified Personnel for working so quickly finalizing the “Emergency Service Technician” classified position. Student safety is a high priority and this job will help our schools by coordinating emergency supplies, training and interaction with the city. Those are just a few of the news items since we last met, but I thought you might find the information useful. It is wonderful working with a board that recognizes the contributions that classified employees make to our district. We truly appreciate your support. Thank you! ICOC REPORT Jenniffer Jones announced that the next ICOC meeting will be held on September 13th at 7:00 p.m. At that meeting the topic of discussion will be the yearly community report; the community is invited to learn about the C4 Bond expenditures and how campuses and classrooms have been improved or enhanced. Ms. Jones also is on the New Bond (Measure X) Committee and encourages the community to learn more about Measure X and how it would benefit the schools and the community by voting yes. SUPERINTENDENT’S Dr. Peplinski stated the following: COMMENTS Good evening to everyone and I want to thank our student board reps for their service and we look forward to seeing you all throughout the year. I would also like to thank Crestview Elementary, Royal High School and Santa Susana High Schools for attending this evening. The Arts are thriving in SVUSD; encourage the community to go to the events held at the high schools. The student groups are always my favorite part of our meetings. I want to acknowledge and congratulate Dr. Deborah Salgado for earning her doctorate and to welcome Tee Buckle back to Simi Valley Unified School District.

We are now a few weeks into the school year and I have visited many schools and already seen some great teaching at our schools. As many families and staffs have seen, there was a tremendous amount of work done on our campuses this summer. Thank you to our staff that has worked so hard to beautify and update our facilities. We have over 14,000 Chromebooks out in our schools and although we are still working on some network issues, we are so excited to see all of this technology in use in our classrooms. Thanked the 460 teachers who attended the professional development over the summer and the TOSAs that worked to put the trainings together. We received our state assessment reports and I am extremely proud of our student efforts last year. In the 6 areas of measurement between elementary, middle, and high schools in Language Arts and Math, all of our areas went up with one remaining unchanged. As a district our ELA scores went up 3% and our math scores remained unchanged. There are many individual school highlights to be celebrated as well. Of note, two of our high schools (Royal and Santa Susana) out performed a neighboring high school in ELA that some families left our district to attend. Santa Susana High School is the highest performing high school in the county with Royal High School seeing the largest gains at the high school level. The gap between our high schools and those in Conejo, Moorpark, and Oak Park is now within 5% points. This gap has dramatically closed from double digits only one year ago. In elementary, the highest gains in ELA by any school in our district were seen at Arroyo elementary. Arroyo increased by 18% in ELA. Katherine also had a 12% point gain in ELA. Atherwood and Crestview saw the highest gains in Math at the elementary level. We have several elementary schools Big Springs, Vista, Hollow Hills and Wood Ranch) that are near the top of the county overall. At the middle school level, all three of our schools remain very strong middle schools. Hillside saw 13% gains in ELA and 11% in Math. Our community should be very proud of these results as we continue to improve and look to be a premier school district. Although test scores are only one measure of student success and we know there is much more to a school than a score, we also know that this a public measure of schools and we take the results seriously. I would also encourage parents to compare the demographic of their family when looking at test results and keep in mind that all schools have different feelings and cultures and finding the best fit is dependent upon more than just test scores. Finally, I want to thank our Classified and Certificated employees for preparing for the beginning of this school year. I want to wish everyone a

great school year and I know that we are in store for a great year, filled with student and district successes! BOARD COMMUNICATION Trustee Sandland shared the following: • Enjoyed visiting schools on opening day; Township, Valley View and the high schools; great work being done. • Concerned about shade structures on campuses; especially the Valley View amphitheater shade • So proud to see the improvements at Santa Susana High School, Royal High School and Simi Valley High School • So much to be proud of at all the school sites. • Welcomed back Tee Buckle as the Assistant Principal of Simi Institute for Careers and Education • Welcomed and thanked Emily Winkler, Student Board Representative, for the student board report • Thanked Nora Kuntz, principal at Crestview Elementary, for another pathway for students (elementary, middle school to high school) • Very impressed by the RHS Highlander Brigade’s performance • Thanked the SSHS Abbe Road a cappella group for their performance and is amazed SSHS will be celebrating their 20 year anniversary • Congratulations to Dr. Deborah Salgado • Thanked the Classified Employees for all their hard work • Thanked Jenniffer Jones for her ICOC report and the support she provides to the district supporting Measure X • Is hopeful this board passes a resolution to support Prop 55 • Missing fellow board member Rob Collins and wishes him and his family well Trustee White shared the following: • Glad to see Beau Sandland (Trustee Sandland’s son) and Brian Beckett on the football field on television this weekend – Carolina Panthers (Trustee Sandland thanked Trustee White) • Best wishes for Vincenzo McFadden, of Royal High School, and to his family during his medical procedures • It is great to see so many enthusiastic students, great events and new programs in place. At my own child’s open house, his teacher said, this year I’m trying a lot of things new. We have a unique opportunity to make strides this year. Business/Facilities #5.8. - Authorization to install 5 marquees. Trustee Daniels inquired how many sites have marquees, and how many are going to be installed. Mr. Todo responded that these will be the first five marquees installed, and the plan is to have marquees installed at all sites. Trustee Blough inquired that Santa Susana Elementary currently has two old marquees, will school have all marquees replaced. Mr. Todo responded that some sites may need additional marquees, each school site may have different needs. For sites that will have two marquees, it will only include one LED marquee. Business/Facilities #5.11. - Ratification of Compromise and Release or Stipulated Award. Trustee Daniels inquired the reason this item was a ratification.
