THE FOLLOWING COUNCIL GOALS ARE BEING ACHIEVED: Focus Resources in Ontario's Commercial and Residential Neighborhoods Encourage, Provide or Support Enhanced Recreational, Educational, Cultural and Healthy City Programs, Policies and Activities FISCAL IMPACT: There is not a direct fiscal impact associated with this action. BACKGROUND & ANALYSIS: Since 1971, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has conducted nationwide campaigns to celebrate historical places and showcase preservation activities. In 2005, the National Trust began designating the month of May as Historic Preservation Month. The goals of Historic Preservation Month are to promote historical places for the purpose of instilling national and community pride, promoting heritage tourism, and showcasing the social and economic benefits of historic preservation. This year, the City is celebrating Historic Preservation Month by continuing the “Model Colony” Awards program and presentation. The awards ceremony will be held at a City Council meeting in June. This year’s theme for Historic Preservation Month and the Model Colony Awards is "Past Meets Possible: Reimagining Place and Purpose." This serves as a guiding framework for viewing our community's historic resources not as static relics of a bygone era, but as vital, dynamic assets that are uniquely capable of addressing contemporary urban needs and economic demands. Historic preservation functions as a highly effective mechanism for managing growth and revitalizing local neighborhoods. By protecting our existing structures, we maintain the unique "sense of place" and character that defines our community’s identity and fosters deep-seated local pride. A central component of this identity is the continued stewardship of historic houses. Private homeowners act as the frontline guardians of our shared history, maintaining what are essentially living museums. 10
