STUDENT BOARD REPORT The Board Report was presented by Karyme Flores from Apollo High School: “Good evening President Smollen, Clerk of the Board Jubran, Trustees James, Pietrolungo, and Resnick … as well as Superintendent Dr. Youssef. My name is Karyme Flores, and I’m here tonight representing Apollo High School. I’m so excited and honored to share the Board Report on behalf of my peers across the district. Nicole Alvarez at Monte Vista reports… The second semester has begun, with labs starting back up. We had five students graduate between the end of December and this past week. Our next big event is Junior & Senior Game Night and the first official No Place For Hate (NPFH) meeting, where we will begin brainstorming a kickoff of our first project to combat hate. We also have our 3rd and 4th grade field trip that same month, taking place at the Strathearn Historical Park. In the past week, we also had a special guest come in representing Guide Dogs of America during our Rotary Club hours to speak about service dogs and to introduce Dakota, a service dog in training. We have started this semester strong, with new graduates, events, and an overall positive atmosphere among all of our grades. We are excited to be starting this new semester and working together to keep this positive energy going. Ivy Roessell at Royal High School reports: Our students had an amazing and restful winter break, feeling great with high hopes for second semester. In Academics, new classes have begun for certain Royal High students. This includes electives and certain history classes, including Macroeconomics, and many more. With new classes, certain AP exams have pushed their sign ups for specific semester long classes. We also just celebrated our four Students of the Month for Academics, Athletics, Arts, and Activities. In Arts, our Royal High Varsity Dance Team has our first ever dance competition on January 31. Our theatre department has just started rehearsing for their Mamma Mia! musical, with showings in March, and they are also preparing for their One Acts later in the semester in partnership with Sinaloa Middle School. In Athletics, certain sports teams seasons have begun, including Wrestling, Boys Basketball, Boys Volleyball, and Girls Soccer. We have high school spirit at all of these events, with students supporting their fellow Highlanders. In Activities, Sophomore Class Council is preparing for our HIT Winter Formal dance, which is Mardi Gras themed this year and will be held at Moorpark Country Club. Leadership is planning the rally and spirit days, with tickets almost selling out in the first few days of posting them. With many students also completing a CSI project, we are very grateful that students are bringing back the Empowerpuff Flag Football game. This is a

4 single flag football game open to all female juniors and seniors, where all proceeds go to Ribbons of Life Breast Cancer Research Foundation. We are very proud of all of our Highlanders for their great achievements. At Santa Susana High School, Gracie Kim is happy to report that the student body has returned from Winter Break feeling well rested and recharged. There is a collective sense of relief on campus now that first semester finals are officially behind us, and we are eager to jump into the new term. Since we are just a few days into the new semester, our calendar is just beginning to fill up, but we do have a few exciting highlights to share with you tonight. First, regarding our Arts Department: On January 23, two of our dedicated seniors will be hosting an AP Art Gallery. This event is entirely student led and will showcase the impressive portfolios and hard work of our AP Art students. There will be complimentary food and drinks, and it promises to be a fantastic display of our school’s creative talent. Second, regarding Student Activities: The very next night, January 24, we will be hosting our Winter Formal. Ticket sales have been strong all week. The theme this year is “Twilight in Kyoto,” and ASB has been working hard to create a beautiful atmosphere for the students. We are anticipating a safe and very fun evening. Finally, a look ahead at Community Service: I am very proud to announce that we are in the planning stages of a collaborative service project with our friends at Royal and Simi High Schools. We are organizing a tri school Prom Dress Drive to support underprivileged students in our community. We plan to accept dress donations for a few weeks, followed by a “shopping day” in March or April hosted at one of our campuses. On that day, students in need will be able to come and pick out a dress for free, ensuring that financial barriers do not stop anyone from enjoying their Prom. Thank you for your time, and we look forward to a great spring semester. At Simi Valley High School, Angelina Dang reports: As we begin the new semester, our Pioneers have returned energized and motivated to continue a successful school year. School spirit and student involvement have been strong across campus. In athletics, we are incredibly proud of Coach Benkert for his nomination for the Region 5 Power of Influence Award. This recognition highlights his dedication, leadership, and positive impact on our student athletes and school community. In student leadership, we recently recognized our winter sports teams, including their exciting competitions against our cross-town rivals, Royal. We also hosted a successful Spirit Week that brought energy and unity to campus and concluded with a spirited rally. Additionally, our Drama Club is actively preparing for their spring musical and is currently accepting auditions. Participation has been strong, and we are excited to see the creativity and talent on display. Overall, it has been a strong and positive start to the semester, and our students continue to demonstrate leadership, school pride, and involvement across all areas of campus. Finally, at Apollo High School, we are excited to announce that 11 students are graduating as we concluded the second quarter. We are also eager to welcome 28 new students for the third quarter, which starts this Friday. Last Friday, Apollo’s leadership class hosted their January Fun Friday. The theme was “Plant Your Seeds, Grow Your Goals!” Students enjoyed music, played games, and wrote

5 goals for the new quarter and the remainder of the school year. A fun time connecting with students and staff was had by all. The people have spoken. Congratulations to Gabe Macias, Apollo’s Student of the Month for December. Gabe has recovered 40 credits at Apollo since enrolling last summer and will be graduating early tomorrow. Comments from Apollo’s staff about Gabe include “always works hard, a pleasure to have in class, great attendance, super respectful, and helps others.” In the future, Gabe sees himself working as a mechanic after taking classes at Moorpark College and Oxnard College. Congratulations, Gabe. Your Apollo family is so proud of you. Thank you again for giving me the opportunity to share the great things happening at our high schools.” PUBLIC COMMENTS Trustee Jubran reported that there were three blue cards (individuals requesting to speak to the Board) received. There were no yellow cards (individuals stating their opinion and not wanting to speak to the Board) received. At this point in the meeting visitors and employee organizations may address items that are NOT on the agenda. Public Comments: 1. Sheila Johnson – spoke against a possible bond. 2. Elena Johnson – concerned about student protest that happened last week with a sign that got her concerned. Also spoke against a bond. 3. Reina Bejerano – spoke on support of a bond. EMPLOYEE ORGANIZATIONS None SUPERINTENDENT’S COMMENTS Dr. Youssef shared the following statement: “I would like to thank our students, our staff, our families, our community, and of course our Trustees for a very successful first semester. Our second semester started on January 7, 2026 and, just like our first semester, we are off to another great start. We are in School of Choice season in our district. We value the ability to give our families choices as they select which Simi Valley School best meets the needs and interests of their students and families. Tours, showcases, and special events continue to take place across our district. We already have 154 applications for Transitional Kindergarten (TK) students. At this exact time last year, we had 90 applications. Keep the applications coming. We have 18 wonderful elementary schools that will meet the needs and interests of our students and families. We have three amazing middle schools with various areas of focus to meet the needs of our students and families as well. We also have outstanding high schools to meet the needs and interests of our students and families. If all of that is not enough, we also have an Independent Learning Academy (Monte Vista) to accommodate students and families who prefer personalized learning from the convenience of their own home. In terms of middle schools, we introduced and celebrated a new program in partnership with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation at Sinaloa Middle School last year: Sinaloa Middle School, The Ronald Reagan Academy of Communication and Leadership. The academy offers debate courses and Mock Trial courses in our freshly equipped and renovated Ronald Reagan Room, Broadcasting courses in a fully equipped and renovated broadcasting studio along with a sound/engineering booth, and journalism courses in our renovated computer lab. All of our middle schools are fantastic and have

6 so much to offer. Of course, we want to thank our community for making these facility renovations possible through our Measure X Bond. In regards to the support we receive from our community and how much we value the Home-to School partnership, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude and say THANK YOU to everyone who understands the importance of public education and its impact. The value of public education extends far beyond the classroom. It influences economic stability, increases property value, promotes social harmony, and strengthens civic life. We look forward to greater success in 2026 and our continued partnership with our city and community members. On that note, our Education Foundation is hosting The Super Bowl for Education this Saturday evening at Harley’s Bowl on Los Angeles Ave. at 6:00pm. I already have my lane reserved and can’t wait to raise money for our students and schools.” “Plant your seeds, grow your goals.” BOARD COMMUNICATION Trustee Pietrolungo shared the following: • Wished everyone a Happy New Year. • Expressed excitement about celebrating school counselors. • Looking forward to bowling to raise funds for Simi Valley Education Foundation.
