Ms. Lantos introduced Michael Geller, a student who shared his experiences in the class while learning the advantages and disadvantages of owning your own business. Cris Sullivan has worked with the Minor Parent Program since 1970; instructing pregnant and parenting teens to develop healthy parenting skills, finding community resources, learning about child development, life skills, pregnancy component, nutrition, safety, immunization, first aid, sewing skills, career and work readiness, as well as welcoming teen fathers and providing childcare for those students during instructional time. STUDENT The Student board report was presented by Fausto Verdugo of BOARD Apollo High School. “Good evening President Blough, Clerk of the Board Daniels, Trustees Collins, Sandland, White and Superintendent Dr. Peplinski” Apollo High School reports that the second quarter is off to a great start. We welcomed about 35 new students to our campus in October for second quarter. We have had many exciting events on campus this year. We had an amazing Halloween Carnival on campus, with many fun activities. The highlight for many students was interacting with their teachers, and really seeing a different side of them. Our teachers also cooked Thanksgiving lunch for us yesterday for our annual Thanksgiving feast. Recently, we hosted our second Blood Drive of the year. Many of our students donated again. It was so successful that we had a waitlist to give blood. Some of our Leadership students and staff also participated in a packing party for Operation Shoebox. The group helped pack over 200 boxes so children in need would receive holiday gifts this season. Emily Winkler of Simi Valley High School reports that our staff is considering a schedule change for next school year. In addition their staff is beginning their campaign to raise test scores. Their Renaissance class is holding a fundraiser to help missing pets in Simi Valley. Also Simi High just hosted their band spectacular which showcased over 1,000 students. Their school also had their homecoming game and dance. Even though they didn't win, their pride for the alumni was exceptional. Their school then had Simi vs. Royal week. The majority of the school participated in their dress up days which helped get the football team ready to take the win. Every student sitting in the maroon mob displayed school spirit. Their school helped to raise $552.75 for a student at Royal. His name is Vincenzo McFadden, and he has leukemia. At the Simi vs Royal football game they

presented the money to him and showed support by throwing orange balloons (the color of the leukemia ribbon) and holding a poster that stated "Keep Fighting Vincenzo". In other news, their school’s cross country team won league. Simi High is also, for the first time ever, holding a dance showcase on December third. In the spirit of the holiday, Simi Valley High School is very thankful for our school spirit, and our incredible staff. Carley Connell of Santa Susana High School reports that we just had our “Roaring Twenties” fall ball dance at the Odyssey in Granada Hills. This event turned out to be a success as tickets once again sold out. At Santa Susana High School, there are many events taking place. We have students participating in the drives taking place at school. From November 1st to November 4th the Care and Share Committee alongside SSHS PTSA held a food drive to benefit local needy families through donations to the Simi Valley Samaritan Center. In the theater department we have an upcoming play called Flowers for Algernon scheduled for December 2nd and 3rd. Starting this week rehearsals will take place. The Instrumental Music Department held their Interact concerts on November 9th and 10th. In regards to individual classes, the class of 2017 had a Panda Express and Yogurtland fundraiser on November 10 th to raise funds for senior activities and prom. The class of 2020 has an upcoming Jamba Juice fundraiser Friday the 19th. Leadership students are participating in the Samaritan’s Purse-Shoebox gift. Throughout the school, students and staff are doing well and are full of spirit. Fernando Estrada of Monte Vista reports that as we progress through the first semester of the year here at Monte Vista, we are happy to be racking up our knowledge with our current extra curriculum activities! We have been making excellent progress with our Engineering class by getting closer to constructing and programming our first 3-D printed drone and in our Amateur Ham Radio class we are extremely excited to be implementing and using our own Call and Receive room with handheld radio sets and its own 50 foot antenna! Our students are also about to enjoy a very educational field trip to the California Science Center where they will be learning about the Deep Ocean and other aspects of marine biology. We are also excited for our students to be participating in the ASVAB test (thank you Royal High!) which will allow them to explore possible career options. We've also given high school students the opportunity to socialize and get to chat with the counselor at our weekly High School Lunch Bunch! In our green screen work shop, students were seen at the Hamptons on the East Coast as well as a Hawaiian Island wedding. Monte Vista is excited to have an active Interact Club and look forward on helping out on such things as 'Operation Shoebox' and the Rotary Bike Build project. I believe that we are progressing throughout the school year very nicely and we are looking forward to our upcoming events!

Kayla Hitt of Royal High School reports it has been a busy month for students and staff at Royal High School. We had an extremely successful homecoming week in mid-October, where all three football teams beat T.O. and we had 500 students attend our homecoming dance. Royal’s choir program also put on a dance and students came dressed in their best costumes to celebrate Halloween. During homecoming week, we had a mock election at our school that allowed students to experience the voting process. Royal showed their undying spirit during Simi week and demonstrated our pride in being Highlanders, regardless of the score. Seniors on football and cheer were celebrated at the Simi game for their commitment to their sport. Our boys’ water polo team is currently in playoffs and hoping to win the CIF title. With all the activities that took place in October and early November, students are eager to enjoy a week off from school this coming week. CSEA-EMPLOYEE Jim Jarrard, CSEA President, stated the following: ORGANIZATION President Blough, Clerk Daniels, Trustees and Superintendent Peplinski: I would like to take this opportunity to thank Trustees Rob Collins and Debbie Sandland for their years of service to our schools and community. They have been a valuable part of the positive changes that are making SVUSD stronger and well respected. Our schools are improving test scores and expanding programs that benefit our students. It has been very exciting watching our district change so dramatically over recent years and we can thank our Board of Education for much of the inspiration. Our district has weathered difficult times with furlough days and layoffs but we stayed focused and worked hard to re-brand and re-build. Our community has shown support for our schools with the passing of Measures X and Y and Propositions 51 and 55. I believe such support reflects positively and shows trust of the public towards both our School Board and our district. Our students, teachers and staff will all benefit from the passing of these initiatives for many years to come. Our facilities will receive much needed upgrades and repairs including a new network infrastructure and one-on- one technology for our students. Again, thank you both for your dedication to our schools and for being involved in the improvements our district is benefitting from now and in the future. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and friends and I wish you both the best with your future endeavors.

SEA-EMPLOYEE Amanda Hogan, SEA President, stated the following: ORGANIZATION Good evening President Blough, Clerk of the Board Daniels, Trustees, Dr. Peplinski, and district staff, We are so pleased with the passage of both Prop 55 and Measure X. The passage of Prop 55 will ensure the stabilization of educational funding in our district. Districts in the state of California will continue to have the same funding sources available for students and employees. We look forward to scheduling bargaining dates so that we can continue to work toward the return of pre-recession working conditions. With the passage of Measure X, our district can continue with the much needed updates & maintenance to our school sites, while continuing to implement new technology. Also, tonight is a very special night as we recognize the accomplishments and contributions of two longtime school board trustees: Rob Collins and Debbie Sandland. The Simi Educators Association wants to publicly recognize how much the two of you have supported educators, employees and students throughout the years. Every time a proposal for a reduction in class size, an action item to improve employee working conditions (which we all know betters student learning conditions), or an approval of an overdue raise was up for a vote- you both proactively supported it- without fail! We appreciate all of your support throughout the years! Trustee Collins, you have a special place in SEA’s heart. You began as a teacher in our district in 1969 at Sinaloa Middle School, later transferring to Simi Valley High School. Then you became the President of Simi Educators Association in 1986. During that time, you helped us achieve the largest pay increase in our history! In 2003, we were very fortunate when you became a school board trustee because you have continued to give educators a voice and provide the educator’s perspective in every school board decision. Some prior and current SEA leadership is in attendance tonight, in order to say thank you for serving our district and our union...Thank you, Rob! Shortly, we will begin a new era on our school board without our current historical perspective represented. Next month, we will welcome our two new school board trustees, and we hope that we will be able to move forward while preserving the historical relationship that has been fostered between the district, school board and our association. We have always met at the table to work on any problem that has arisen. It is important for the school board to continue to value each employee organization and the value of the educator knowledge & perspective. Thank you again, Rob and Debbie! We wish you the best in your next journey!

ICOC REPORT Jenniffer Jones shared with the Trustees that the next scheduled meeting of the ICOC will be held at 7:00 pm on November 29, 2016, at the District Offices, Educational Service Center, Binns Room. Ms. Jones also congratulated Trustee White for his reelection to the board; congratulated the community for passing Measure X and wished both Trustees Sandland and Collins the best in future endeavors. SUPERINTENDENT’S COMMENTS Dr. Peplinski stated the following: Thanked Faustino for his student board report. Welcome to all of our guests this evening and thank you to our students and staff from Katherine Elementary and Apollo High School. Congratulations go out to Michelle Valdivieso for this distinction from the California Association of School Psychologist. We are very proud of your recognition and grateful that your expertise are right here in Simi Valley Unified School District. I would like to extent my sincere thanks to both Trustee Sandland and Trustee Collins for their many years of dedicated service to our Board and to the community. Their time on the Board has been successful and their passion for the community was always evident in their service. Again, we thank them for their role in shaping Simi Valley Unified School District and I personally thank them for the ongoing support. I would also like to congratulate Trustee White on his re-election to the Board and welcome Trustees Elect, Eric Lundstrom and Bob LaBelle. I look forward to working with both of you as well. I am also happy to say that Measure X passed with overwhelming show of support from our community and I wish to thank our voters for their support of our schools and for their confidence in our district to thoughtfully use these bond dollars to maximize our facilities. This bond will dramatically improve the experience our students have on our campuses and I look forward to getting projects underway soon. I would like to personally thank the Measure X Bond Campaign Committee for their diligent work in securing the support needed to assure the successful passage of the bond initiative; specifically to Jenniffer Jones and Amanda Hogan who are both in attendance tonight. Over the past several days, I have received emails and calls from parents, students, and staff regarding the national election and because of concerns I heard, I felt compelled to write a message to our staff, which I sent this past weekend. The following in an excerpt from that email. As you know, students will have or have had different reactions to the election outcome. It is our responsibility as educators to help our students understand our democratic process. It is important for them to know that our collective nation has chosen the next president. This can be done in the absence of discussing candidates or political parties. It is also our duty to

assure students that our schools are places where they are safe, their differences valued, and they are loved. In my view, this is an ideal time to help them discover what it means to be principled and how they can do that respectfully in disagreement. SVUSD has students that celebrate many different holidays and religions. We also have families that celebrate none. Our district has about 12% of students with special needs and we welcome them to our classes alongside their peers. We have over 10 languages spoken by our families from over 10 different ethnic groups. We have LGBTQ students in our classrooms every day. It is important that as educators ALL students know that the adults at their schools are allies and that our district is one of inclusion. Please be hyper-vigilant in looking for students who may be struggling or who may need to be reminded of our inclusive culture. It was very sad to receive an email from a student in our district over the weekend who was afraid to go to school on Monday. I assured her that our schools are full of caring adults and supportive classmates. Please help our students to feel secure, valued, and loved. I know you do this every day. In regards to a potential sale of the district office property, we were notified the State approved our waiver at their last State Board meeting. This will allow the board, if they so choose, to move forward and expedite the sale of the district office property located at 875 E. Cochran Street. The waiver allows for the disposition of this property through a negotiation process, rather than the education code directive on sale of surplus property. Finally, the holiday season is upon us and I wish all of our families a safe and restful break. I would like to share in this season of thanks, that I remain incredible proud and grateful to serve as our district superintendent. We truly have an extraordinary community of people and staff who help to make our schools great. Simi Valley is a great place to raise a family. Furthermore, would like to express concerns about selling properties in the future; it is a short sited decision; in regards to the district office which should be functional and operational, but a new building should never be built; the board must be sensitive to the age of our schools; hoping that future boards will support neighborhood schools and

First Reading of New Board Bylaws 9111 (Term Limits) PERSONNEL SERVICES (none) EDUCATIONAL SERVICES NAVIANCE (3.1.) Information Regarding Naviance Implementation Update Hani Youssef gave a brief background on Naviance. Naviance is a comprehensive college and career readiness solution for middle and high schools that helps align student strengths and interest to post-secondary goals, and improve student outcomes. Simi Valley Unified School District entered into a three year contract agreement with Hobsons/Naviance to provide access to the Naviance College and Career Readiness Platform starting with the 2015-2016 school year. We have been successful in achieving our overall goals to this point. We are currently in the second year of implementation. Mr. Youssef introduced Shannon McCabe. Shannon McCabe shared the presentation: • 1 st Year Goals o Provide Training & Support o Electronic Upload of Data o Create District Tasks (grades 6-12)  55% of students completed one task (goal 50%)  95% of MS students will build a resume (goal 75%)  85% of HS seniors will complete the graduation survey (goal 85%) o Communication to Students o Student Usage = 80% of 7 th -12 th students login to Naviance I year 1 (2015-2016)  Student Visits: 3,090 to 17,923 = 480% increase in year 1 o Begin Using EDOCS  2,950 Prospective College Applications  3,049 Active Senior Applications  350 Different Colleges Applied

• 2nd Year o District Tasks o Site Roll-Out Plans o Training for New Counselors o 6th Grade o Parent Communication • Next Steps o Course Planner o Future Training o Parent Workshop o Highlights  Student Resource  Tool for Parents  Helpful for Counselors Trustee White is excited that the schools are using the program: wants to see more information getting out to parents and students; staff to market the program because it does streamline the process when a student applies for college; when students can self-manage the process, it takes the burden off the counseling office. Trustee White requested more reports from staff. Dr. Peplinski added that during year 2, students will be more comfortable using the program. Trustee Daniels inquired about student receptiveness and Trustee Blough inquired about the effect on counselor ratios. Mr. Youssef responded, the primary purpose is to support students, second is that the program helps counselors manage their time using EDOCS. Students will be able to manage their own course selections (challenge: our course master has to be aligned with A-G requirements); as students manage their own futures that part of a counselors job duties will become more efficient. Trustee Blough inquired if special education students work with Naviance; Mr. Youssef stated the program is all inclusive. Trustee Blough also asked if teachers get reports about their students; if the program is funded through the County; and is very supportive of keeping the program going at our schools in the future. Mr. Youssef responded that in year 3, the district would have to fund Naviance, no more funds will be coming from the County. Mr. Youssef stated that he has made inquiries in regards to the criteria needed to fund from the College Readiness Block Grant, if the state approves Naviance we can keep the program running for many years. Dr. Peplinski stated he feels comfortable that the district will have several options to get the funding for year 3 ($87,000). Trustee Blough requested a report on which campuses were using the program. Dr. Peplinski responded that Mr. Youssef can provide that information in an update to the Board. Trustee Daniels wanted to make sure there continues to be communication to parent and students on how to avoid suspensions and expulsions; because many most likely could be avoided. Trustees Blough and White agreed for the need to make sure parents are aware of what can lead to suspensions and expulsions. Sean Goldman responded that parents are reminded in writing and verbally of their rights.
