This initiative recognizes children as treasured members of society, and brings awareness to the value of loving, accepting, and appreciating their individual cultures, races, and ethnicities. El Día de los Niños is currently a nationally recognized effort that emphasizes the importance of increasing literacy for all children from all backgrounds. While April 30th is the official day of recognition, we acknowledge that if we are to truly prepare students for life, we must subscribe to a daily commitment of connecting children and their families to diverse books, languages, and cultures. Recognitions and Proclamations Subject 04 Adoption of Proclamation - The Month of the Military Child, April 2023 (Strategic Planning and Partnership) Meeting Apr 18, 2023 - Regular School Board Meeting Type Action (Consent) DESCRIPTION : In 1986, Secretary of Defense, Caspar W. Weinberger designated each April as "The Month of the Military Child." This month, we honor our military families, especially our youngest heroes - our children and our students. During "The Month of the Military Child," schools recognize their military-connected students and their families' contributions to our country and community. These young heroes continue to inspire us despite the challenges they face due to their unique situation, such as having a parent deployed for extended periods, changing schools, and leaving friends. These students demonstrate their resilience through their achievements, successes, and contributions to the community in which they live. Below are a few ways schools throughout the district will show appreciation to our military-connected students and families during April. School Board Proclamation of Month of the Military Child Purple Up Challenge-Encourage all schools to show support for military children by wearing purple on April 19, 2023. Various school sites will recognize military-connected students through social media, marquee displays, and the morning show. Schools are encouraged to use the military-themed Storytime Online with their students to learn more about military life. Consent Agenda Subject 7.01 Increase in Expenditures for Request for Proposal (RFP) #20190-DST-KJ Primary Foodservice Distributor (Operations) Meeting Apr 18, 2023 - Regular School Board Meeting Type Action (Consent) Recommended Action Approve the increase in expenditures for RFP #20190-DST-KJ Primary Foodservice Distributor. DESCRIPTION : On March 29, 2021, the Board approved the agreement with Gordon Food Service, Inc. for a fixed delivery fee per case for frozen, refrigerated, grocery, and dry foods to the district's self-operating kitchens. At this time, expenditures have exceeded original expectations, requiring board approval. GAP ANALYSIS : The district expects vendors to provide food service delivery services to district cafeterias. The current and anticipated supply chain issues have caused inflationary pressures on food and transportation costs as well as limited availability for food. We need a distributor to ensure an ongoing food supply to make the student nutrition program possible. PREVIOUS OUTCOMES: This agreement is currently performing well for the district. EXPECTED OUTCOMES: The district will continue to ensure the requirements of the agreement are adhered to.
