Memo To: Members of the Board of Education Adrian B. Talley, Superintendent Doug Eccarius, Deputy Superintendent From: Tarah Fowler, Director of Middle School Core Curriculum Date: April 25, 2022 Re: Request for approval of middle school ELA resource BOARD MEETING DATE: May 2, 2022 APPLICABLE BOARD POLICY(S): Policy 6:210 RECOMMENDATION: Title: All Thirteen: The Incredible Cave Rescue of the Thai Boys’ Soccer Team Author: Christina Soontornvat ISBN: 9781536209457 Publisher: Candlewick Copyright: 2020 Cost: $22.63 Quantity (include totals for all schools): 450 Total: $10,183.50 Course: 6 th Grade Project Arrow ELA (ENGL0620) Committee Members: Emily Clausen, Allison Harvey, Kelly Mulhern, Nicole Valenza, Jessica Walsh Review Process: The curriculum committee met during the 2020-2021 school year to consider options for novels. The curriculum committee members read several novels during the summer of 2021. Curriculum team members and their teaching partners piloted the recommended novel during the 2021-2022 school year. RATIONALE: This novel supports the Illinois Learning Standards for English Language Arts & the 6 th grade Project Arrow ELA curriculum. This novel would be replacing Tom Sawyer . This novel furthers our goal of selecting texts through the lens of equity as it is written by an own voice author and features diverse characters, many of whom are the same age as the students who will be reading the book. Although we currently have several nonfiction texts that are shorter in length, adding this novel to our curriculum gives students the opportunity to strengthen their skills with a longer, more rigorous nonfiction text. All Thirteen has won several awards including 2021 Newbery Honor Book, YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Finalist, 2021 Kirkus Prize for Young People’s Literature and 2021 Sibert Honor Book. The feedback from the piloting teachers and their students has been overwhelmingly positive.
