The seniors are preparing for our various end of the year activities, including prom, Grad Nite, and graduation. We opened the year with Almost Maine, a theater show on January 16th and 17th. The freshman class is about to put on our last school dance of the year, Spring Fling, on February 13. Open House is on January 22nd, followed by our

6 very own Dancing with the Stars on January 24th. While the performing arts programs are preparing for upcoming shows and festivals. All of our robotics teams are getting ready for their competition on January 25th. We’re going to end the month with our third annual Swing Night on January 31st. We’re celebrating our successful Road Show week, and can’t wait to see all of the prospective students on campus! Kabir Jain of Royal High School reports this month has been off to a great start! We had our Evening of Excellence where people were welcomed to meet our Royal family, learn about our programs, and see our culture of connectedness in action. Our winter sports kick-started their seasons, as boys and girls soccer, girls water polo, and boys basketball had several games this month. Moreover, our winter rally and winter formal dance are coming up. The theme for winter formal is Old Hollywood, and it is going to take place at the Majestic Theater in Ventura. At the end of the month, we are having a voter pre- registration at lunch as part of a student’s CSI project. Speaking of CSI projects, there are many getting started, and on January 28th, four students, including myself, are helping out at the Free Farmers Market at the Simi Valley Community Garden as part of our Royal High School CSI Project. We are gleaning trees around Simi Valley (with permission from homeowners) for excess fruit that we can donate to the Farmers Market. We would love to see people around our community come to the event at 2pm on January 28th to enjoy fresh produce! Kylee Dungan of Simi Valley High School reports that the second semester of the school year is well underway. Athletics is in full swing with our boys and girls basketball and soccer teams playing royal this week, and wrestlers are continuing with competitions. Leadership is working hard to advertise and pump up the spirit for the Simi Vs Royal games as well as continuing planning for our Winter Formal and Winter Rally. Daily peer tutoring begins this week and is open to all students in the library. Finally, our PTSA is holding a parent forum on the topic of vaping at the end of the month. Joey Hamilton of Apollo High School reports that we have had a great start to Quarter 3. At the end of Quarter 2, we had a great turnout of parents and family for our Awards Assembly. On our first day back from winter break, we enjoyed some Krispy Kreme donuts and team building activities in our classes. Our end of the day, students participated in a school-wide STEM activity focused on wind power. Students worked in groups to build a fan that could lift the most amount of marbles. Each group received a bag with various supplies and could only use the supplies provided. At the end of the day we had a competition and it was cool to see the different creations each group came up with. Everyone is working hard in their classes and doing their best to earn their credits. Dylan Groshko of Monte Vista reports the new semester has had a great start and we are going strong. We have scheduled labs including Cooking with Mrs. Bonnie on Monday’s from 3:30-5:30, Piano, Yoga, Robotics. Floral Design with Dr. P. will resume in the spring and it is free for all Monte Vista students to attend. Moorpark College is holding an information night on January 29th from 6:30-8pm about how to join ACCESS. We’ve had a very strong start to our second semester already and cannot wait to see what this semester brings us in the new 2020 year.

7 SUPERINTENDENT’S COMMENTS Dr. Peplinski shared the following statement: Good evening everyone and Happy 2020. Thank you Ryan Valencia for being here and please thank the Assembly member for us as well. Mrs. Taggart, congratulations, huge honor and very difficult to achieve. Some of you may know, the California Distinguished School recognition went away for a number of years. It was replaced by Gold Ribbon Schools and we have a number of Gold Ribbon Schools in our district. Now, the California Distinguished School is back and it is very hard to obtain, so congratulations to Vista. I believe only nine schools received this recognition in Ventura County. I would also like to acknowledge Santa Susana High School for their presentation they made last week as a California State demonstration school. Educators and leaders from all over the State came to see their programs and talk to teachers, staff, and students. We are very excited to have an item on the agenda this evening that will award the bid to begin construction on SVHS’s new performing arts space. Royal High’s will be coming shortly. Thanked Mitali for being here representing Santa Susana High School. We have our State of Schools address tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. at the District Office. Please park in the back of the building as we will be meeting in the Studio space. Finally, thank you to all of our staff for their continued hard work and I am looking forward to a great second semester! Final reminder that it is School of Choice time in our district. Tours are available every Tuesday morning in February at all elementary campuses. At Secondary campuses you can call to make an appointment or just stop by.
