Engaged and Invested Community BACKGROUND: Independence Day, observed on July 4, marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, when the thirteen American colonies formally declared their separation from Great Britain, a step that led to the establishment of the United States of America. The Declaration, primarily authored by Thomas Jefferson and adopted by the Continental Congress, articulated the enduring principles of liberty, equality, and self-government that continue to shape the nation’s identity. July 4, 2026, will commemorate the 250th anniversary (Semiquincentennial) of the nation’s independence. This historic milestone provides an opportunity for reflection on the nation’s founding ideals, recognition of the challenges and progress experienced over two and a half centuries, and celebration of the diverse people and communities that contribute to the country’s ongoing story. Orange County Public Schools recognizes July 4, 2026, as a significant moment in American history. This anniversary serves as a time for both celebration and thoughtful reflection, honoring the principles upon which the nation was established while encouraging continued commitment to civic engagement, unity, and the pursuit of a more perfect union.
