Approval of Proposals for Stage Rigging Repairs and Curtains at Jefferson Middle School: Elizabeth Stegmaier Meeting Jun 30, 2025 - Board of Education Special Meeting Category 5. Consent Agenda: New Business Type TOPIC: Approval of Proposals for Stage Rigging Repairs and Curtains at Jefferson Middle School BACKGROUND INFORMATION : Over the last few years, the District has had the stage rigging for curtains and lights inspected, fixed deficiencies, and purchased and installed new stage curtains at several schools. Jefferson’s stage curtain and lighting rigging were inspected at the beginning of the summer. The inspector identified significant issues with the rigging system, citing its poor condition from age and wear, non-compliance with current standards, and safety concerns with the way stage curtains and lights are supported by the building structure. The report is attached. Examples of necessary repair items include: removing a pulley system that is inoperable and not properly attached to the joists, replacing corroded wire ropes and non-standard terminations, replacing curtain hangers with code-compliant hangers and suspension hardware, and installing safety cables on all stage lights. The curtain system is in poor condition, with many curtains torn and fraying and lacking a current fire-retardant coating. Vertigo provided a proposal to fix items that do not comply with industry standards and best practices for overhead rigging. The proposal also includes removing non-functional items to eliminate safety hazards. Vertigo’s proposal is $33,134. North-West Drapery Service submitted a proposal to provide and install new drapery. The fabric weight and sewing will be consistent with the curtain installed at Edison Middle School last year. The quoted fabric is an inherently flame-retardant material that is code-compliant and does not need retreatment of flame retardancy for the life of the curtains. North-West Drapery Service’s proposal is $20,980. Operations & Maintenance staff will remove the existing curtains, the front partition divider, and the overhead track for storage of the divider. This will make way for a front split curtain track for the new front curtain. The rigging repairs by Vertigo will be completed this summer, ahead of the fall semester’s start. North-West Drapery Service will install the curtains in the fall semester, likely during fall break, when students aren’t present. STAFFING/STAFF DEVELOPMENT NEEDS: None. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: Expenses for this project will be paid by proceeds from the Fund 61 County School Facility Tax (1% sales tax). Project costs will be included in the District’s upcoming FY2026 budget. ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION: None. RECOMMENDATION: Administration recommends approval of the proposals from Vertigo for $33,134 and North-West Drapery Service for $20,980.
