The 30-second read

Recorded outcome

The Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) board approved a date change for a community event at the former SunTrust building and voted to proceed with the purchase of the Schwettman property despite environmental concerns. The board accepted responsibility for future property cleanup as a condition of the real estate closing.

Why it matters

The city is moving forward with the acquisition of the Schwettman property, which commits the city to managing and paying for environmental remediation on that site.

The Motion Passed. 5 - 0 Ayes: Chopper Davis, Matt Murphy, Peter Altman, Bertell Butler IV, Brian Jonas Schwettman Closing Discussion This agenda item was an emergency addition based on Councilman/Director Butler's comments made during the end of the regular City Council meeting. City Attorney Driscoll asked the Board to discuss whether or not to move forward with the scheduled closing for the Schwettman property that was to take place on Wednesday, October 22, 2025. The District School Board at their regular meeting earlier this evening denied the City's request to extend the closing for thirty days due to environmental reasons found on the property. The Board conducted the discussion and at the conclusion decided to move forward with the closing as scheduled under the acknowledgement that the City would be responsible for the remediation of the property. Motion made by Brian Jonas, and seconded by Matt Murphy to move forward with the closing as scheduled for Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
