What This Bill Would Do
North Carolina prohibits criminal justice agencies, sheriff's offices, and individual officers from assisting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement with civil immigration arrests or removal warrants in schools, hospitals, and houses of worship. Any existing agreements between local law enforcement and ICE that conflict with this restriction are rendered void. A willful violation by an officer may serve as grounds to suspend, revoke, or deny their state certification.
Local police and sheriff deputies face the loss of their state law enforcement certification if they assist federal immigration authorities inside sensitive community facilities.
