What This Bill Would Do

Senate File 302 requires voter identification cards, driver licenses, and nonoperator identification cards to explicitly state whether the cardholder is a United States citizen. Additionally, voters presenting identification that does not show citizenship status must provide separate documentation proving U.S. citizenship. These requirements apply to all cards applied for, issued, or renewed on or after the effective date of the act.

Why it matters

Registered voters and driver license applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship to receive identification documents showing citizenship status, and voters lacking citizenship indicators on their ID must present extra documentation at polling places.
