What This Bill Would Do
Households whose of income is veterans' benefits are exempted from paying under a new bill introduced in the Alabama Legislature. To claim this exemption, households must provide proof of income to the county health officer by the first billing date of each year. The measure takes effect on October 1, 2026.
Low-income military veterans and their survivors whose only income is from veterans' benefits will save money by being excused from mandatory trash collection and disposal fees charged by local governments.
- Under existing Alabama law, households whose sole source of income is Social Security are already exempt from county and municipal solid waste collection fees. context
