INFORMATION - Paid Internships with Slamdance Film Festival for Video Production Pathway Students Meeting Mar 11, 2025 - Regional Occupational Program (ROP) Meeting Type Information Goals 1. Student Success (Increase Student Achievement via Student Centered Instruction) BACKGROUND Part two of the Compton Filmmaker Initiative has succefully concluded. The Slamdance Film Festival took place in Los Angeles, California from February 20-26, 2025. As part of a growing partnership between Slamdance and Compton Unified School District, Slamdance offered paid internships and festival experiences to Compton High School TV/Video Production Pathway students and Dominguez High School Digital Media Production Pathway students for the entire length of the festival. Student interns were also grouped with mentors from ARRAY, a multi-platform arts and social impact collective founded by filmmaker Ava Duvernay. Seven students from Compton High School and nine students from Dominguez High School were hired as interns for Slamdance. Notably, students interacted with LUMIX, Beverly Neufeld Screen Writer and Screen Writing Professor at USC, Film Producer and Founder of Slamdance Peter Baxter, and Director of the short film Mombom Dr. Patricia Wells. Student interns worked collaboratively to produce short vignettes for the Slamdance social media page. The Compton Filmmaker Initiative is divided into three main components, as follows. 1. In-class filmmaking education with industry professionals Slamdance will support Compton’s media arts teachers and its curriculum by coordinating and bringing into classes industry professionals engaged in specific areas of filmmaking who will speak about how they do and succeed in their job. We note the value of both “above the line” and “below the line” filmmaking craft and under the direction of the teachers we will represent a cross section of filmmaking roles from directing to casting to catering. Slamdance’s festival director Taylor Miller and co-founder Peter Baxter will look to Slamdance alumni in securing the participation of these industry professionals for each class. 2. Slamdance Film Festival 2025 Internship Program As part of the 2025 Slamdance Film Festival, Compton students will participate as paid interns, offering them the opportunity to gain real-world experience in film festival operations as well as the opportunity to watch films, meet filmmakers, industry members and the festival audience. 3. Compton Filmmaker Showcase at USC In collaboration with USC, we have secured a showcase for student filmmakers on May 1, 2025. The showcase is intended as a culmination and celebration of the students' creative work, featuring a program of short films, a question and answer session and guest speakers. File Attachments C.
