CONSENT CALENDAR Type Action (Consent) Recommended Action It is recommended that the Governing Board approve the Field Trip for 24 Franklin High School students in Orchestra to perform at the Music in the Parks Festival at California Great America in Santa Clara, CA May 4, 2024. INTRODUCTION The Music Department at Franklin High School has begun to create stability and a positive musical culture that has been lost due to the pandemic. In order to expand the program, and restore what was previously built, the orchestra students need to get more exposure to clinicians and audiences of different regions, travel to perform, and participate in more bonding events. Playing at the Music in the Park Festival will allow the students to perform before a large audience, receive constructive criticism from certificated adjudicators and expand on the positive culture that is being created. This event will also help bolster student recruitment in the future by incentivizing participation in the orchestra with a performance and recreation in the amusement park. With the Certificated teachers, the student to chaperone ratio is 8:1, not including parent volunteers. ANALYSIS California’s Great America is a theme park that is located in Santa Clara California. The groups will arrive at Franklin High School, and commute by charter bus to Milpitas High School where they will perform to receive comments and a clinic from the certificated adjudicators and then will travel to the theme park. While at the theme park, students will be allowed time to enjoy the park before heading to the awards ceremony at the end of the day. This will be the culmination of all the music students have learned and performed this school year. The educational impact of students from Franklin High School attending the Music in the Parks Festival is to increase the understanding of natural science concepts, develop critical thinking, increase problem solving, social skills, and cooperation. If Franklin High School Orchestra is not able to attend the Music in the Parks Festival, they will miss an important educational opportunity that is accessible through this field trip. CONSENT CALENDAR Type Action (Consent) Recommended Action It is recommended that the Board of Education approve the field trip for 40 students and two teachers from Weber Institute to The Academy of Art University and visit the San Francisco Modern Museum of Art in San Francisco, CA on April 9, 2024. INTRODUCTION Weber Institute of Applied Sciences and Technology recognizes the importance of students participating in activities and events that expose them to career choices within their field of interest. Weber Institute currently provides courses in computer technology such as; coding, webpage design, and digital art. Weber also provides diverse levels in studio art such as; Art 33A/33B (dual enrollment college courses), Art 1, Art 2Honors, and Art 3Honors. Currently many of these students wish to pursue or learn more about opportunities provided by local universities or institutions that focus on technology and the arts. By attending this fieldtrip to the Academy of Art University and SFMOMA students become aware and are exposed to a variety of current educational programs and current practicing artists. Students will have a guided tour of the university programs and facilities, plus they will also have a docent guided museum tour at the SFMOMA. ANALYSIS The trip is being coordinated and supervised by Luz Lua-Foster, a 30+ veteran art teacher for SUSD (Stockton Unified School District), Delta College (Dual Enrollment Program) Art Instructor, and practicing local artist. Funding is provided by the LCAP College and Career Readiness 1.2 (SA11.15). As an art educator that has students from different academies at Weber Institute, I notice the need to help students see the possibilities in different fields of study that incorporate technology and the arts. Most students cannot visualize how taking an art course, digital arts, webpage, or coding class can become a future career or area of continual study. The Academy of Art University and SFMOMA both provide an awareness of potential career pathways to their future.
