Goals 1. Student Success (Increase Student Achievement via Student Centered Instruction) BACKGROUND The Compton School District recognizes the need to provide STEAM and engineering curricula to prepare students for college and careers. While the district is committed to providing students with a rigorous and relevant curriculum, there is a gap in integrating engineering to solve real-world issues in daily learning. Also, students don’t have the opportunity to collaborate with other students across the world on projects. This gap limits opportunities for students to engage with real-world challenges, apply academic skills in meaningful contexts, and develop competencies in critical areas such as STEM, communication, and global citizenship To address these issues, the district seeks to partner with Springbay Studio, whose interactive, game-based learning experiences directly tackle these challenges by engaging students in STEAM and engineering projects with global peers. This approach not only bridges the gap in environmental engineering education but also provides a dynamic platform for skill-building and global collaboration, preparing students for future STEM careers and fostering a commitment to sustainability. ANALYSIS Springbay Studio’s interactive, game-based learning solutions are uniquely positioned to bring STEAM and Engineering activities that promote engineering and environmental education while fostering global collaboration among students. Their services provide an engaging platform where students participate in STEAM and engineering challenges designed to align with educational standards like California Common Core and STEM frameworks. These competitions will be an integral part of our Engineering Week and STEAMFest events. Through Springbay’s immersive games, students tackle real-world environmental problems such as CO2 reduction. These activities encourage critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and problem-solving while helping students apply math, science, and language arts skills in a meaningful context. The platform also emphasizes collaboration by connecting students with peers globally, enabling them to work on shared sustainability challenges. This global engagement enhances cultural awareness, systems thinking, and teamwork—key competencies for 21st-century STEM careers. The benefits to the district are substantial. Springbay’s services transform traditional environmental education into an interactive and student-centered experience, making learning more engaging and relevant. By integrating these activities into the curriculum, the district can promote higher academic achievement, foster global citizenship, and prepare students for future challenges in STEM fields. Additionally, this partnership positions the district as a leader in innovative, sustainability-focused education, empowering students with the skills and confidence to make a positive impact on their communities and the world. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IMPACT Springbay Studio's League of Green Leaders Game engages students in an interactive experience that teaches them about climate change, engineering, and sustainable living, all while enhancing their STEAM knowledge and celebrating Engineering Week. Through hands-on activities, students explore real-world environmental challenges, analyze data, and design innovative solutions, applying science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics in meaningful ways. All resources are aligned with California Common Core standards as well as develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. The program's global aspect allows students to compete and collaborate with peers worldwide, fostering cultural awareness and teamwork. For Compton Unified, participating in this initiative enhances academic achievement and aligns with the district’s goals of providing cutting-edge education. It positions the district as a leader in sustainability and STEAM integration, attracting partnerships, funding, and community support, ultimately benefiting both students and the broader educational community. The Game and activities will highlight the District’s Engineering Week celebrations. Effective January 14, 2025 to May 2026. Goals 1. Student Success (Increase Student Achievement via Student Centered Instruction) BACKGROUND The Compton Unified School District (CUSD) proposes implementing a comprehensive Grading for Equity initiative at Compton, Dominguez, Cesar Chavez, and Centennial High Schools. This initiative, in partnership with the Crescendo Education Group, aims to transform grading practices to enhance accuracy, reduce bias, and motivate students. The effort includes tailored professional development sessions for staff and leadership and a study tour to learn from successful implementations in other districts. Grading equity is important given the impact on various student metrics, i.e. high school graduation, college acceptance, and financial aid. Ultimately, the aim is to reduce the amount of D/F grades while also increasing student learning. ANALYSIS Research underscores the adverse effects of traditional grading practices on teaching and learning, particularly for underserved student populations. This initiative includes: Professional Development for Staff : 2-day workshops tailored to Math, English, Science, History, Physical Education, VAPA, CTE, and World Languages faculty. Leadership Training : A 2-day institute focused on supporting teachers and leading equitable grading systems. Equitable Grading Study Tour : An opportunity for district representatives to observe and learn from San Leandro Unified School District’s successful implementation of equitable grading practices. This initiative is an essential step toward ensuring fairness and consistency in evaluating student performance. By addressing grading inequities, the program supports the district’s broader educational goals and strengthens its commitment to student success which should see long-term benefits in enhanced teacher practices, improved student outcomes, and a more equitable grading system. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IMPACT The proposed work is projected to have a profound effect on key student achievement metrics: Graduation Rates : More equitable grading will reduce barriers for students meeting graduation requirements. A-G Completion : Improved grading practices can ensure an accurate reflection of student capabilities, increasing college readiness rates. College/Career Indicator (CCI) : A focus on equity will positively influence indicators tied to post-secondary readiness. Remediation Reduction : By addressing grading inconsistencies, the need for credit recovery programs, such as after-school interventions and summer school, should decrease. This initiative aligns with the district’s commitment to equity and excellence in education, laying a foundation for systemic change and sustained improvement.
