(IN-PERSON) Category 6. CONSENT CALENDAR Type Action (Consent) Recommended Action It is recommended the Governing Board approve a field trip to Alcatraz Island National Park in San Francisco, CA for the Native American Indian Center Summer Enrichment Program at Edison High School on June 20, 2023. INTRODUCTION The Native American Indian Center (NAIC) conducts a summer enrichment program and field trips each year for Native Students to develop their cultural identity from June 5th-30th of 2023 based at the Center on the Edison High School Campus. This year NAIC is taking the students to Alcatraz Island National Park in the San Francisco Bay. Depending on the availability of transportation the date of the trip will be June 20, 2023. ANALYSIS This field trip will help Native American students understand historical Native American grievances, students will be able to explain why Native Americans occupied Alcatraz, Students will examine the effect of occupation on Native American pride and activism. During the late 1960s, the public largely ignored the small, isolated, rocky island in San Francisco Bay known as Alcatraz. Home to the notorious federal prison from 1934 until 1963, Alcatraz -- nicknamed "The Rock"-- was still a few years away from being named a National Park and becoming a major tourist attraction in the Bay Area. But on November 20, 1969, the island became the unlikely stage for a landmark event in the Native American rights movement. On that date, 89 Indians -- mostly students from colleges and universities in San Francisco and Los Angeles -- announced they were taking over the island, setting in motion what would become the longest occupation of a federal facility by Native Americans to date. By law, Federal lands that are not designated as such are to be returned to native tribes and the federal government was exploring the sale of the island at the time of the occupation. If the Native American students are not allowed to go on this field trip, they will miss the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of their own history, culture, and the ongoing struggle for Native American rights and sovereignty. The occupation of Alcatraz is a significant moment in the history of the Native American rights movement, and studying it can help students to better understand the legacy of colonialism, forced assimilation, and dispossession that Native Americans have faced for centuries. Additionally, the field trip can provide students with a sense of connection to their own heritage and culture, and inspire them to become more engaged and active in advocating for Native American rights and sovereignty. Date of Trip June 20, 2023 Recipient of Service Native American students that are registered for the NAIC summer program. (IN-PERSON) Category 6. CONSENT CALENDAR Type Action (Consent) Recommended Action It is recommended that the Governing Board approve a field trip to California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, CA for the Native American Indian Center Summer Enrichment Program on June 23, 2023 INTRODUCTION The Native American Indian Center (NAIC) conducts a summer enrichment program and field trips each year for Native Students to develop their cultural identity from June 5th-30th of 2023 based at the Center on the Edison High School Campus. This year NAIC is taking the students to California Academy of Science. The date of the trip will be June 23, 2023. ANALYSIS It is immensely beneficial for Native American students to visit the California Academy of Sciences to learn about our ecosystem. Such field trips provide invaluable opportunities for these students to engage with hands-on, experiential learning that fosters a deep understanding and appreciation for the natural world. Visiting the California Academy of Sciences allows Native American students to explore diverse ecosystems firsthand, including those that may have cultural significance to their heritage. By experiencing different habitats, flora, and fauna, they gain a deeper connection to their natural surroundings and develop a sense of cultural identity tied to the land. This engagement can instill a sense of pride in their heritage and promote the preservation of their ancestral knowledge and practices. Interacting with knowledgeable experts, exploring interactive exhibits, and participating in educational programs can spark an interest in scientific exploration and conservation efforts. By exposing Native American students to these opportunities, we not only empower them to pursue their passions but also contribute to diverse representation within scientific and environmental fields. If Native American students were denied the chance to go on such a field trip, they would miss out on these transformative experiences. They would lose the opportunity to witness the interconnectedness of various ecosystems and their own place within them. Additionally, they would miss the chance to gain practical knowledge about conservation and sustainable practices that can positively impact their communities and traditional lands. By allowing Native American students to visit the California Academy of Sciences, we enable them to enrich their understanding of the world around them, cultivate a sense of cultural pride, and potentially ignite a lifelong passion for environmental stewardship. Denying them this opportunity would deprive them of experiences that could shape their academic, personal, and professional journeys, as well as impede the preservation of their cultural heritage and the biodiversity of our shared planet. (IN-PERSON) Category 6. CONSENT CALENDAR Type Action (Consent) Recommended Action It is recommended that the Governing Board approve the ratify an Out-of-State Conference for Up To 15 Stockton Early College High School Faculty Staff to Attend the Annual AP Conference in Seattle, WA from July 19-21, 2023. INTRODUCTION College Board Advanced Placement (AP) and Pre-AP training is a requirement for Stockton Early College Academy (SECA) teachers as every student is enrolled in Pre-AP and AP as part of our mission as a charter school. The AP and Pre-AP programs also directly support district efforts and state guidelines to graduate all students career and/or college ready. By supporting the collaboration of teacher teams to ensure that staff receives the latest in curriculum and strategies related to the analysis of student work and student learning, teachers are able to determine their effect on learning, and in the process, identify the most highly effective instructional practices. Training in the delivery of a specific and rigorous curriculum builds the capacity of our teachers for supporting student learning that is required for SECA as an official Pre-AP and AP school. ANALYSIS College Board’s AP and Pre-AP course work and assessment is designed to support and create access for all students with a rigorous curriculum designed to prepare them for college and career. This conference is unique in that it offers teachers access to the best and most respected people in education related to Advanced Placement and Pre-Advanced placement education. Dynamic course-specific workshops themed sessions, and keynote speakers will provide powerful opportunities for teachers to learn and incorporate best practices into all courses offered at SECA. This in turn will provide site staff with the tools to improve student achievement resulting in higher college acceptance rates. The essence of providing a rigorous AP and PreAP curriculum will continue to create a focus on and a commitment to each student’s learning. When a school and staff collaborate around a common curriculum and expectation high levels of learning will be embraced by educators and students. This is the work that will also allow colleagues to work together to clarify exactly what each student must learn, monitor each student's learning on a timely basis, and provide systematic interventions that ensure students receive additional time and support for learning when they struggle. In order to encourage and create this as a consistent practice staff must be trained and supported by the necessary skills, curriculum, and strategies learned in settings such as a professional academic conference. This also supports the mission of SECA helping all students learn, achieve, and be successful in high school and in higher education. As a result, site staff will further make a collective commitment to this vision by employing what is learned. The intended outcomes for the ongoing training are to develop and continue a culture that promotes rigorous coursework and expectations that will engage in collective inquiry into both best practices in teaching and best practices in learning. Our goal is to encourage collective inquiry to enable team members to develop new skills and capabilities that in turn lead to new experiences and awareness. Ultimately, this heightened awareness can support consistent practice in attitudes, beliefs, and habits which, over time, support the AP and Pre-AP best practices as part of the culture of the school. If approved, staff will be trained in the latest and best practices in support of the SECA mission. Students must have the most prepared teachers, the latest technology, and an up-to-date curriculum in order to learn at the highest levels, be competitive when enrolling for college, and be successful while attending institutions of higher learning. If this item is not approved, our students and teachers will go without needed and required professional development. Ongoing training is both a requirement of AP / Pre-AP and a requirement of SECA’s approved charter. Failure to provide such training could lead to the de-authorizing of the courses and program at SECA. This board agenda item was originally approved at the April 4, 2023 Board Meeting with the cost not to exceed $36,000.
